Book-o-Box: Unboxing the June Book Box

Hey guys! So a little while ago, I found out that there was a couple of bibliophiles in Chennai who have decided that they, like the rest of us in this country, were tired of seeing other countries having amazing book subscription boxes while we had to either pay exorbitant shipping prices or simply have no way of getting it because international shipping wasn’t an option.

Moreover, also tired of all those upcoming YA subscription boxes in the country and nothing to ease the hunger of the die-hard fans of literary fiction.

So unlike the rest of us, these book lovers decided to do something about it and thus, the wonderful Book-o-Box was formed, where they hand curate the items and the book of the box that match its respective monthly theme.

Book-o-Box is a monthly book subscription service that costs only ₹750 (including local shipping) and comes with a paperback novel and about five-six interesting little bookish goodies that absolutely matches the theme of the month.

Last week, my June monthly book box was delivered and so today I’m going to be unboxing it for you. I decided to wait a week mainly because I know some people didn’t get their boxes last week and I didn’t want to be the one to spoil it so I’m really excited to be finally getting to do it.

This month, their theme is ‘Spanish’ and everything in it was related to that theme (of course). So here’s what the box looked like in all it’s glory. It came with red wrapping paper which I thought was quite thoughtful as per their box's design and outlook and of course, each item from the box matched the theme of the month, adding an wonderful touch to the box as a whole.

And not to mention, they collaborate with new, unique and upcoming artists on the block and hence their bookish goodies are eccentric and special, I bet you won't find it in any other book subscription service in India.

1. Book of the Month (BOTM): Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

A young woman named Amanda lies dying in a rural hospital clinic. A boy named David sits beside her. She's not his mother. He's not her child. Together, they tell a haunting story of broken souls, toxins, and the power and desperation of family.

Fever Dream is a nightmare come to life, a ghost story for the real world, a love story and a cautionary tale. One of the freshest new voices to come out of the Spanish language and translated into English for the first time, Samanta Schweblin creates an aura of strange psychological menace and otherworldly reality in this absorbing, unsettling, taut novel.

The best thing about this book box is that they never reveal about the book, not even a single hint, and that's what makes it even more exciting. As a result, they wrap the BOTM with a brown wrapping paper and tie the cover with a note stating, "Blind Date with a book". After unwrapping it, I found myself with a Spanish literary book called, Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin that has been shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2017. And I'm currently reading this book. Can't wait to pen my thoughts here. Soon you will get to know about it.

2. A Coaster by Suhasini @mypaperlovelies

This was my absolute favorite item from the box. It is a cute little blue coaster made of glass that said, ‘Living Between the Pages of this Book and 30867 more’. How adorable and apt for a bookworm! I loved it and fun fact, I actually have been looking for a nice bookish coaster for a while now, so this came at the perfect time. And the talented Suhasini has designed the awesome coaster, check out her store on Instagram, its swoon worthy.

3. Postcard designed by @soniya.bhase

In the box, there was a postcard with the title of the BOTM printed upon a cool graphic designed background. It is designed by Soniya and I thought that it was lovely and adds a flair to the whole box. I have put it up on my bookshelves and it makes my bookshelf look so amazing.

4. Book-o-Box monthly newsletter

This one talks about the lovely author of the month and about her book a short interview and many fun facts, a total delight to read it.

5. Book-o-Box welcome pouch and a pocket notebook

They also included their trademark welcome pouch, which is really lovely and useful, along with a pocket notbook, with lots of pages, which is another thoughtful and handy item from the box.

6. Tea sachet from TeaBox @teabox.tea

They included Oolong tea satchet which is healthy and extremely delicious, and it gave me so much releief from undue stress.

7. Coffee capsule from Fresh Brew Co.

If you like your coffee bitter and strong, then try out this brand, sadly, this coffee was not my type at all.

8. A handheld book reading lamp

Another thoughtful goodie for bookworms reading in the dark. Can you spot it in the picture below? Hint: It's that cute green thing.

Overall I absolutely loved the box. Everything was just so on point and wonderful.

If you’re a book lover in India, please please please do support them. They are such lovely people and they really are so accommodating and efficient. Also we need to support the bookish culture in India, so let's band together to support the hard work of the folks behind this amazing book box to make it a roaring success.

How to Book:

1. Visit http://www.bookobox.com/

2. Click on the Subscribe button

3. Choose your type of subscription service whether you want 1 month box or 3 months or 6 months box, the higher you go, the price of the 1 month basic box goes lower. So it is advisable to go for 3 months or 6 months subscription service. And not to mention, it is incredibly affordable. It does not cost a bomb!

It's as easy as that.
