Review #344: Pandora Red by Jay Tinsiano

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.”

----John Steinbeck

Jay Tinsiano, a British writer, pens his latest thriller, Pandora Red that features undercover detective, Frank Bowen, rushing from the city of London to Cuba while working in a covert operation to help protect the British government that not only restores his faith on working for the right and the wrong side but also jeopardizes the life of his family, but only problem is the time is ticking and he has to act fast to save his family as well as his faith for the government.

Synopsis:

Frank Bowen's mission is to find a GCHQ whistleblower but in doing so unwittingly risks everything, including his own family's safety.

As part of a covert team, assigned to dangerous missions, Bowen believes he knows what he's up against, until a team of Russian mercenaries are thrown into the mix, leaving everyone and everything hanging in the balance.

It's a race against the clock to save all that he holds dear and uncover the dark truths behind his mission.

Frank Bowen, an undercover agent working for the British government gets assigned on a case where a GCHQ employee stole some high level governmental data from her office and most probably she is on the process to sell it to someone. His search for that employee leads him to Cuba, where his tea m gets attacked by Russian gangsters thus giving him a benefit of doubt on whose side actually he is working on. Especially when his partner and his youngest son gets kidnapped on the process, makes him re-think his decision of working for the British government. But little did he knew that the top government personnel are after that stolen information, which if leaked might destroy the whole government.

This is not the first book that I read by this author. His first book, False Flag was one hell of a roller-coaster ride filled with action, conspiracy and adventure. This time too, the author has featured thrilling adventure that will give an adrenaline-rush to the readers and brain-twisting political conspiracy, that threatens to expose the corrupt leaders. The author's writing is pretty eloquent with an engaging narrative style. The pacing of the book is really fast and with the progress of the story the readers will get hooked on to it till the very end.

The characters are well-developed and are depicted with back-story thus letting the readers contemplate with the characters' demeanor. The main character, Frank is a brave detective who is fearless to move in the darkness and also a caring father and partner towards his son and partner. Frank not only thinks about his family but also cares about those who are wrongly back-listed by the government.

The back drop of the story line is set in London as well as in Cuba. The picturesque painting of Cuba projected in the background of this story is bright and vivid. From the streets of Havana to its darkest alleys to the hot, sultry weather, everything has been captured strikingly. Yes, of course, i felt like I was transported to Havana as the scenes are described intricately. On the negative note, there are some things which were a huge let down for me- the part when Frank tries to make Sarah understand that she should trust him rather them fighting alone, that part did not sound convincing enough for me.

All in an all, this is a gripping thriller with an equally compelling climax, so mystery lovers can easily try out this book!

Verdict: A promising thriller filled with action and adventure and all the road of this mystery story leads to Havana!
