Review #305: The Paper Swan by Leylah Attar

My rating:
5 of 5 stars

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

----Martin Luther King Jr

Leylah Attar, the New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, pens her latest contemporary romance novel, The Paper Swan that is a dark twisted tale of love, where two people are pulled together by revenge and lies and the story unfolds across so many decades filled with twists and turns that finally give the readers a feel that at times love can be vulnerable and dark like the moonless night sky.

Synopsis:

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit.
They lie.
For 21 days she held on.
But on Day 22, she would have given anything for the sweet slumber of death.
Because on Day 22, she realizes that her only way out means certain
death for one of the two men she loves.

A haunting tale of passion, loss, and redemption, The Paper Swan is a
darkly intense yet heartwarming love story, textured with grit,
intrigue, and suspense. Please note: This is NOT a love triangle.

Well from the synopsis itself, the book sounds bit disturbing and easily captivates the minds of the readers without giving away a slight peek into the story and let me tell you, this is not even one bit of dramatic or anything closer to that, it's all dark in here, complexity reflects from every pages of the book. Firstly, I can't stop gushing about that book cover which is sinister in a beautiful way, and it aptly suits with the story of the book.

Trust me, you all romance fans out there definitely need to read one of the best contemporary romance books of this season. It's a killer one with all that mind games that the author keeps playing with her readers by alluring them into the dark twisted world of the heroine of this book who begins her journey in a life-and-death kind of situation and each moment with her in that creepy situation made me gasp constantly with fear and anticipation.

The main female character of this book is portrayed as someone very strong and unlike other romance novel heroine, she knows what she wants even if she has been pulled into the life and death kind of situation, also the way she contemplates with all the lies surrounding her life is something brilliant as well as fascinating to read about. The main male character is also strong and kind of brooding, whose presence fills the light with an intense energy and viable darkness, but his dark past supports his present demeanor and justifies his actions. Both the characters are linked together by lots of lies sprawled between so many decades, finally dictating their love story.

With the unexpected turn of events all through out the story, and with an engaging and thoroughly intriguing narrative, the story gradually seeps through the veins of the readers thus making them addicted to it till the very last page. This type of romance novels which surprises at every turn of the page must be devoured in with a blind faith. At times the violence might throw the readers off their edges and can give a chilling feel to the whole dark, broody atmosphere of love, but the author peels the layers from darkness to give birth to one of the most truest as well as purest form of love through this story.

Verdict: A must read contemporary fiction and this is by far one of the most compelling romance novels of this year.
